Salad Days：少不更事时，青葱年华

在英语中，要表达一个人正值青春年华，可以用youthful，或者是有点文艺气息的in the springtime of life，在人生的春天时光。除了这些表达之外，还有一个非常地道但又“意想不到”的表达：salad days，沙拉时光。

Salad days表达的不是字面意思的“沙拉时光”，而是“正值青春年华”，特指涉世未深、没有人生阅历的少年时期。比如，In our salad days, we were apt to get into all sorts of mischief on the weekends. 在我们的年少时，我们常常在周末惹出各种闹剧。这里的in our salad days就可以等价于when we were young，年轻时，但多了一些少不经事的少年感。

韦伯词典对salad days的定义是：time of youthful inexperience or indiscretion。在这个定义中有两个要点，一是youthful，年少的，二是inexperience or indiscretion，缺乏经验，做事轻率。正因为年轻，才会不经世事，所以才能做事不够沉稳甚至鲁莽。所以，salad days更多和中文的“青葱岁月”有点类似。

下面让我们通过更多的例子来理解salad days的含义：

从上面的例子可以看到，salad days一般用于in one’s salad days，在某人年轻的时候，在某人的青葱岁月里。比如，in your salad days，in my salad days，in our salad days。

Salad Days的出处

与其他的绝大部分习语不同，salad days这个习语有着明确的起源。Salad days出自莎士比亚于1606年创作的Anthony and Cleopatra：“CLEOPATRA: My salad days, When I was green in judgment: cold in blood,”这里的salad days就是用来指人年轻天真纯洁的时期。

在莎士比亚的200多年后，salad days这个表述才渐渐流行起来。1862年6月的The Morning Oregonian报刊：“What fools men are in their salad days.”

在1996年的电影独立日Independence Day中就有这么一句话：“Are the salad days over for President Whitmore?”

直到现在，salad days还广泛出现在各种影视作品、文学作品和日常交际中。
